As a teenager he ran away to Paris; in his twenties he studied composition under Aaron Copland and Virgil Thomson, becoming a respected modernist composer who scored plays by Tennessee Williams. He married the writer Jane Auer in 1938. After the war, on a whim — or so the legend goes — he and Jane sailed for Morocco. Paul never came back. Settled in Tangier from 1947, he turned principally to fiction. The Sheltering Sky (1949) was a New York Times bestseller and a literary sensation — a novel of existential annihilation set in the Algerian Sahara that no reader forgets. His story collection The Delicate Prey (1950) confirmed his mastery of a kind of visceral, dispassionate horror that the Beats — Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs, all of whom made pilgrimage to Tangier — openly acknowledged as foundational to their own work.
