Originally built as a civilian towboat, she was converted into a heavily armed river warship and became one of the famous "Timberclads" of the Western Gunboat Flotilla. Protected by thick oak planking rather than iron armor, Conestoga participated in the campaigns against Forts Henry and Donelson, river patrol operations, and numerous engagements throughout the Western Theater.
