Description

Vintage Stangl Pottery "Fruit & Flowers" Dinner Plate Hand Painted Floral 10.25”. Like much of Stangl’s dinnerware, these pieces often used a sgraffito technique, where the design was hand-carved into the clay before being hand-painted, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike. This is a vintage Stangl Pottery dinner plate in the "Fruit and Flowers" pattern. Handcrafted in Trenton, New Jersey, this pattern is a classic example of mid-century American pottery and was produced between approximately 1957 and 1978. Each piece is distinguished by its hand-carved details and vibrant, hand-painted motif featuring various fruits and floral elements against a creamy white background with a distinctive blue-and-green scalloped border. Like much of Stangl’s dinnerware, these pieces often used a sgraffito technique, where the design was hand-carved into the clay before being hand-painted, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike. Pattern: Fruit and Flowers, featuring a hand-painted design of grapes, peaches, apples, and various flowers. Features: The piece has a distinct dark green outer border and a blue inner border with brown stenciling. Material: Like much of Stangl’s output from this era, it is made of red clay (terra cotta) that is glazed white on the top surface while the brown body remains visible on the underside. Craftsmanship: Every piece is hand-painted, meaning there are slight variations in the brushwork between individual plates. The back of the plate features two distinct markings: The Brown Backstamp: This is the factory mark identifying the maker (Stangl Pottery), the production location (Trenton, N.J.), and the specific pattern. The Green Mark: The small green mark near the center is a decorator’s mark. Because every piece was hand-painted, individual artists at the factory used their own unique symbols or initials to identify their work.
