Vintage Zippo Contempo Butane Lighter. Rare 'Golden Tortoise' Model. Japan 1986. A genuine Zippo Contempo butane lighter, manufactured in Japan during the series' prestigious early production run. Zippo stopped making the Contempo, primarily due to the high cost of production. It is considered one of the premium finishes in the Contempo line. For Sale. A Vintage Zippo Contempo Butane Lighter – With Tortoise Lacquer – Serial Number 1D - April 1986 This model is known as the "Golden Tortoise". First Edition manufactured as this has a serial number under the lid and the inscription panel at the bottom. Later editions had no serial number and the inscription panel was at the top It is considered one of the premium finishes in the Contempo line. Brief History Zippo's first and only lighter to be produced with a specific side-roller butane mechanism, it is a unique item in the brand's history. The Zippo Contempo was produced for a brief period, approximately from 1985 to 1992 making it extremely rare and collectible Zippo stopped making the Contempo, primarily due to the high cost of production. Product Overview: A genuine Zippo Contempo butane lighter, manufactured in Japan during the series' prestigious early production run. This model features a luxurious gold plated trim with high-quality lacquer/resin panels. From my own collection. Selling as no longer wanted, having a clear out. Has been mainly kept in a clean display cabinet & used occasionally. The lighter is refillable and uses standard butane gas. I only used Newport Zero which is highly recommended as the pure butane will keep the lighter clean. Easy to fill, just use the bottles standard nozzle, no special adapter needed. Condition & Functionality: Fully Working: Unlike many vintage Contempo's, this is in full working order with no leaks. It sparks consistently and holds a flame perfectly. The side roller action is nice and smooth. Cosmetic Condition: The original gold plated finish remains bright. The decorative Tortoise Shell panels are completely flush with the frame, with no lifting, shrinkage but do some have some chips & wear. The inscription panel at the bottom is blank. Production Code: Features the authentic production stamp 1D inside the lid, which were the first editions. dating this piece to April 1986.
