Deren’s text blends ethnographic detail with her modernist style and insight into Haitian ceremonial music. In 1947, this American avant-garde film pioneer “became the first woman, and the first American, to receive the Cannes Grand Prix Internationale for Avant-Garde Film [...] for her first four films. That fall she made her first, long-awaited trip to Haiti (World War II had prevented her going earlier) to view firsthand the island’s voudon [voodoo] culture. The film she began there was never completed, although she shot extensive footage of dances and rituals and taped hours of music.” (NAW, Modern) She later published Divine Horsemen: Living Gods of Haiti.
