Original 1871 Bowdoin College Commencement Program, documenting the commencement exercises held on July 12, 1871 in Brunswick, Maine. This commencement took place during the first year of Gen, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's presidency of Bowdoin College. Joshua Chamberlain was a Civil War hero of Gettysburg's Little Round Top and later Governor of Maine. While Chamberlains name does not appear within the printed program-as was common for commencements of this period but he was serving as President of Bowdoin College at the time these exercises were held. The program lists the Order of Exercises, including orations, dissertations, musical selections, degree conferrals, and the names and hometowns of participating students. Text is presented both in Latin and English, reflecting 19th century academic tradition.
