An expression of despondency by Karl Hoffer, German Artist, entitle, "The Wind," won 1st prize of $1900 in the Carnegie Institute International Exhibition of paintings here. The award, made for the first time to a German in the 40 years of the Exhibition, immediately drew fire from critics who decried the "Classic Modernism," and stated their preference for simple American styles in the Gallery.
