Unusual honorary presentation plaque certifying that Capt. Bruce McCandless II is an Honorary Member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), presented in Hollywood, California, September 24, 1984. The plaque is signed by Leonard S. Dunn (Treasurer) and William A. Fraker, ASC (President), a highly respected cinematographer and past ASC president. The presentation reflects the historic connection between the Space Shuttle era and the visual documentation of human spaceflight, and is especially notable as it dates to the same year as McCandless’s landmark untethered spacewalk aboard STS-41B. Mounted on its original wood backing. CONDITION: Overall good condition with light wear consistent with age and display. Minor scuffs and surface marks to the wood backing. Printed certificate area remains clean and legible. COLLECTOR’S NOTES: A highly uncommon crossover artifact linking one of the most iconic astronauts of the Space Shuttle era with the professional organization most closely associated with cinematic image-making. The 1984 date is particularly desirable, tying the piece directly to the year McCandless became the first human to fly freely in space using the MMU—an event that produced some of the most famous images in space history.
