The Battle of Wojnicz was fought around the medieval town of Wojnicz in Lesser Poland as part of the Second Northern War on October 3, 1655 between forces of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth commanded by Field Crown Hetman Stanisław Lanckoroński and Great Crown Hetman Stanisław Rewera Potocki on one side, and on the other, the invading Swedish forces commanded by King Charles X Gustav. The battle ended in a Swedish victory. Shows the location of the Armies during the Battle. The Deluge was a series of mid-17th-century military campaigns in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. In a stricter sense, the term refers to the Swedish invasion and occupation of the Commonwealth as a theatre of the Second Northern War (1655–1660) only; in Poland and Lithuania this period is called the Swedish Deluge (Polish: potop szwedzki, Lithuanian: švedų tvanas, Swedish: svenska syndafloden), or less commonly the Russo–Swedish Deluge (Polish: Potop szwedzko-rosyjski) due to the simultaneous Russo-Polish War. In a wider sense, it applies to the period between the Khmelnytsky Uprising of 1648 and the Truce of Andrusovo in 1667, comprising the Polish theatres of the Russo-Polish and Second Northern Wars. The term "deluge" (potop in Polish) was popularized by Henryk Sienkiewicz in his novel The Deluge (1886) . A decorativew title acrtouche, a battle scene at the lower side and frame-style border adorn the sheet. Source: Samuel Baron de Pufendorf. Writer: Samuel Freiherr von Pufendorf (8 January 1632 – 26 October 1694) was a German jurist, political philosopher, economist and historian. He was born Samuel Pufendorf and ennobled in 1694; he was made a baron by Charles XI of Sweden a few months before his death at age 62. Among his achievements are his commentaries and revisions of the natural law theories of Thomas Hobbes and Hugo Grotius. His political concepts are part of the cultural background of the American Revolution. Pufendorf is seen as an important precursor of Enlightenment in Germany. He was involved in constant quarrels with clerical circles and frequently had to defend himself against accusations of heresy, despite holding largely traditional Christian views on matters of dogma and doctrine. Artist: Count Erik Jönsson Dahlbergh (10 October 1625 – 16 January 1703) was a Swedish military engineer, Governor-general and Field marshal. He rose to the level of nobility through his military competence. According to Cathal Nolan, Count Dahlberg was a highly innovative military engineer in the 17th and 18th century, often referred to as the "Swedish Vauban". He was expert in both building and destroying fortifications. In warfare he won several sieges, including Copenhagen and Kronborg. He famously led a Swedish army across the frozen Great and Little Belts to attack Copenhagen. Dahlberg commanded Swedish engineers in several wars and his historic influence was ensured via his skill at map-making, the fortresses he designed, and his widely read writings on military architecture. Today he is well known through his Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna, a collection of engravings of topographical research. Publisher: Christoph Riegel (1648-1714) was a German engraver, bookseller and publisher. Christoph Riegel was listed as a bookkeeper in the so-called Ämterbüchlein in Nuremberg from 1685 to 1713. He founded a bookstore around 1680 and also appeared as a music and map publisher. The publishing house developed into one of the most important of its time in Nuremberg and remained in the family for three generations. In 1684 he married Susanna Magdalena Eckenbrecht (1659–1719), a daughter of the banker Lorenz Eckenbrecht. After his death, his widow and her son Christoph continued to run the company, and from 1716 to 1720 they were registered as Christoph Riegels Erben in the register of offices. From 1721 to 1728 the business was again called Christoph Riegel, from 1729 to 1746 as Paul Christoph Riegel, from 1747 to 1774 as Paul Christoph Riegels Wittib, from 1775 to 1796 as Paul Christoph Riegels Erben, from 1797 to 1799 as Paul Christoph Riegel, from 1800 as Paul Christoph Riegels Erben and from 1804 as Riegel and Wießner.
