BRISTOL CHANNEL ENGLAND & WALES 1781 GREENVILLE COLLINS UNUSUAL ANTIQUE CHART BRISTOL CHANNEL ENGLAND & WALES 1781 GREENVILLE COLLINS UNUSUAL ANTIQUE CHART Description The Severn or Channell of Bristol. Description: Striking and highly detailed fine unusual interesting 1781 Mount & Page's edition of the Greenvile Collins's copper engraved sea chart of the Bristol Channel, England. The inset lower right illustrates the arrival of William III at Shirehampton on 6 September 1690 following the Battle of the Boyne. Since the late sixteenth century navigators in the waters of the British Isles had utilised the printed charts of the Dutch. During the mid-seventeenth century England fought three wars with the Dutch and her reliance on the work of the enemy was a clear source of embarrassment. The Dutch had private charts which were clearly superior to English sources. The Bristol Channel (Welsh: Môr Hafren, lit. 'Severn Sea') is a major inlet in the island of Great Britain, separating South Wales (from Pembrokeshire to the Vale of Glamorgan) and South West England (from Devon to North Somerset). It extends from the smaller Severn Estuary of the River Severn (Welsh: Afon Hafren) to the North Atlantic Ocean. It takes its name from the English city and port of Bristol. Long stretches of both sides of the coastline are designated as Heritage Coast. These include Exmoor, Bideford Bay, the Hartland Point peninsula, Lundy Island, Glamorgan, Gower Peninsula, Carmarthenshire, South Pembrokeshire and Caldey Island. Until Tudor times the Bristol Channel was known as the Severn Sea, and it is still known as this in both Welsh: Môr Hafren and Cornish: Mor Havren. Decorated with rhumb lines, a compass rose, a banner style mileage scales cartouche and a dedication and a large armorial. In addition the chart motes water depths. Source: Greenville Collins. Mapmaker: Captain Greenvile (or Greenville) Collins was a Royal Navy officer and prominent 17th century hydrographer. He came to the attention of King Charles II for the quality of his journal-keeping during an expedition to find a North-East passage. Many nautical maps of the time were inaccurate and incomplete, and having persuaded the King of the need for an improved survey of the country's coastline, Collins was commissioned in 1681 and appointed by Samuel Pepys (then Secretary to the Admiralty), to chart the coasts of Great Britain. The resulting atlas, Great Britain's Coasting Pilot - sea charts from which we have available for sale below - was the first comprehensive sea atlas produced by an Englishman. Collins was made a younger brother of Trinity House, who supported the project financially. He spent seven years on the survey, the first edition of which was published in 1693. The charts, while not completely accurate, were an enormous improvement on existing maps, entitling Collins to rank as one of the most noteworthy English hydrographers (and indeed cartographers). Twenty-one further editions followed during the 18th century . Publishers: Mount and Page (fl. 1701 - 1760) was a London based firm of religious and maritime publishers that flourished in the 18th century. With the publication of the 1732 English Pilot, the Mount and Page name became well-known worldwide as an imprint of nautical charts. The firm was founded at Tower Hill, London, in 1701 by Richard Mount (1654 - 1722) and his apprentice Thomas Page (1780 - March 15, 1733). Mount had previously been in partnership with his father-in-law William Fisher (1631 - 1691) and inherited the business on the latter's death. Page completed his apprenticeship in 1716. Now fully partnered, Mount and Page subsequently acquired the map plates several defunct British nautical chart publishers, including Greenville Collins, Jeremiah Seller, Charles Price, and John and Samuel Thornton - thus nearly monopolizing the British nautical chart business. The firm consequently received several lucrative government contracts and thereby flourished throughout the 18th century, making the fortunes of both families. Successive generations of Mounts and Pages worked in the business, and the families intermarried. Its staple titles were The English Pilot and Navigatio Britannica by John Barrow. By the 1760s, Richard Mount's grandson John Mount (1725 - 1786) was able to retire to Berkshire where he built the stately mansion, Wasing Place. John's son William (1753 - 1815) was the last to work in the map business, and later generations went into politics. All of the maps we sell are ORIGINALS.
