And in unprecedented ( & So-Cool ! ) fashion ... this Monster Box Set included Thirty ( 30 ) Grateful Dead Shows on Thirty ( 30 ) CD Sets ( 80-CD's in total ) - and, each CD Set represents the sequential years of the Band's 30-Year development ... from 1966 to 1995 ! Obviously, this was a " Deadheads Dream " type Box Set - for the Beyond-Special occasion ... of 50-Years Upon Our Heads ! Fantastic, to say the least ... Wow !!! But, that's pretty much it for the Jokes-here Folks ! - because This ! 5th Night ( of 7 ) of the " Europe '74 Tour ! " is All-Business !! And, in fact ... Mean-Business ! -- just-think " Caution Jam !! ". Smokin' !!! But, that's later in the night - as there is so-much before in this Awesome ! Dead-Show !! ... as it's in fact The-Only ! time the Band ever played " Dijon ". And hey ... maybe that's just why Jerry put on a little extra Hot-Mustard ! on " Wolf's ! " Fretboard !! He's ' On ! ' - ' They're On ' - heck, I mean even the Recording is " On !! ". And, not that you wouldn't all together expect that ( especially in a 2015 released " 30-Trips " 1965 - 1995 Box ... for the " 1974 " Show !! ). But ... it is note-worthy, for certain. As the truth is, this 9/18/74 Dijon, France Show ( at ' Parc des Expositions ' ) started creeping around on DAT ! in the Mid/Late '90's Era - and, at least for me ... That ! was the very 1st time I had heard it. There were some flaws though on those DAT tapes ( cuts, song order, etc. ) - but, the one thing that Really ! caught my ears ... was The-Sound ! -- " Crystal !! ". And, as for this here 3-CD version ? ... Just-About-Perfect !!! I mean ... my fellow Dead Fans - this one is a flat-out Gem !! I mean heck ... it even gets me Zoned-In ( like Totally ! ) on '74 Dead !! As let's face it - the Boys ( & Gal ) have just about what ?? ... 2-More-Shows left ! - until the " Grate-Haitus !?! ". Well, you know - not counting " The Last One(s) " 5-Show run at the Winterland Arena ( just think ... " The Grateful Dead Movie " ! ). So yeah, enough said - as This ! is the Dead-Era that we are talking about here. And this 9/18/1974 Dijon Dead-Night ? ... it Completely ! " Encapsulates !! " it. Uncle John's to Open ! the Show ... Jack Straw ! to follow ( nicely ... ) ... Scarlet !! - Row Jimmy ... The Race Is On ! -- HOT !! - Deal ! ... Then, it's nearly Playin' > Seastones ! time - and trust me, as you'll want to listen to this one Twice ! right-in-a-row. Awesome ... And then, the Eyes ! > China Doll - He's Gone > Truckin' > Drums > ... Caution Jam !!! ... Whoa !?!? - which, I'd probably have-to-say ... is my own personal favorite part of this Fall Tour '74 French Dead-Night !! I mean ... This ! is a straight-up Cooker !! People ! With J.G. just Drillin'-Away ! on the Irwin Wolf !! Then ... Johnny B. Goode ! - because even-they ' Know ' they are Red-Hot ! Which, yep ... They-Are !! Mighty-Mighty 1974 Dead ! U.S. Blues ! for the Encore, and then that's all she wrote for " Dijon-Dead " - Forever ! Two-More France Shows to follow this Hot ! night ( both at Palais de Sports - in Paris ) ... and then, it's Back ! to the Good Ol' U.S. ... of A. !! And, furthermore ... I do know that some knowledgeable Dead Fans have a tendency to say that this Show starts Strong ! in the 1st Set, and then tuckers-out just a tad bit ? And my answer ... No ! - I'm not at all there. This Show is Thick !! with precision interplay & spot-on timing all-throughout. Sure, it's '74 Dead in the Post-Pigpen format ( unlike, say ... Europe '72 ) - but ... I've Always-Loved ! this one. I've also heard ( obviously ... ) that the Band ! was a little down on this Tour ( being only 7-Shows ( England > Germany > France ) ), and with it ' naturally ' being a tough act to follow ... with Europe '72 really being the unavoidable benchmark of ( unfair ) comparison. But, again ... I myself am just not there. As when it comes to '74 ... at least in my own opinion - I say Bring-On ! 9/18/74 " Dijon " - and even Dick's Picks 7 ! too ( from London ). Personally, I find this Europe '74 Tour just So-Unique ! - as it was a natural transition all-in-itself from the Indoor & Outdoor Summer '74 " Wall Of Sound " U.S. Tour. As this " Europe '74 " Tour put the Grateful Dead back into some prime places to play Indoor ! in Europe, and through this recording ... you can just hear the little extra-efforts ( on the string-play, drum-kit, keys, you name-it ! ) virtually Everywhere !! - of the Band ' Genuinely ' trying to make this Tour special. You know, probably much better said ... " Playin for Keeps ! as a Whole-Band " ! As one thing is most definitely for-sure ... that Pigpen ! sure would have been proud of this new-sounding, yet still " Good Ol' Grateful Dead " !!! -- Enjoy !!!!!
