Grateful Dead : Dick's Picks 11 Volume Eleven : September 27, 1972 ( 9/27/1972 ) - Stanley Theater - Jersey City, New Jersey ( NJ ) : 1998 (1972/1998) Grateful Dead Records / Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. ( GDR / GDP ) - GDCD 4031 : ' Original ! ' First ( 1st ! ) Printing ! : Very Rare !! 1972 Grateful Dead !!! ... close to " Rockin' Perfection ! " ?!!!? Wow ... I-Do Believe-So !!! Deadheads !!? So ' IS ' ? 1972 Grateful Dead close to " Rockin' Perfection " ? I don't know, as I guess it depends completely on your musical interests - and specific taste in Dead - but at least to my ears ? It's real-close. The Band is just hitting a Fantastic ! " Prime " ( & even while approaching a most-transitional stage, with the loss of Pigpen ) no-doubt ... and they just seem to have some kind of ' musical-ears ' or something in the backs of their collective heads !!? Everybody hears each other so-incredibly-well, plays pristinely off each others instrument and/or vocal moves - and probably most important overall is the immaculate element of 'anticipation'. I mean even with the most up-tempo material, there is a tightness & cohesiveness that you just didn't find all that often ( if ever, really ) with other bands ( Pink Floyd obviously being an exception ) - even right here during this ' beginning ' of the tail-end of Rock's Golden Era ! To put this in a Grateful Dead " Professional Release " perspective, there have only been Thirty-Six ( 36 ) Dick's Picks sets released between 1993 & 2005, and Three ( 3 ) of them have come from this same 1972 Fall Tour !!! >>> Baltimore Civic ( 9/17/72 ) - Philly Spectrum ( 9/21/72 ) ... & Here ! in this Dick's Picks # 12 : Stanley Theater from Jersey City, NJ on 9/27/72 !!! So I guess Dick used to think like me ... or as I should probably properly say ' visa-versa ' - Thank You Mr. Dick Latvala ! - as We Are ' Eternally ' Grateful for all you have done & shared ! Ahh, yes. But to put the power of this '72 Tour in a nutshell, you are talking about the Band's arguable most self-inspirational Tour ever - Europe '72 ( with Egypt '78 obviously on its heels ), and then this almost immediately followed by the Oregon Country Fairgrounds performance in Veneta, Oregon ( i.e. " Sunshine Daydream ! " ) which many Folks do consider to be possibly the most important Dead Show ever ( boy, that's a bold statement - but I have sure heard it a number of times from some serious Dead Fans to give it some validity ) - then a real nice period of rest --- and then BANG ! A Huge ! & Historic !! September '72 run of Dead Shows on the East Coast where the Dead's Fan Base has just hit the very next level already ! And The Grateful Dead are now facing this rabid Eastern crowd with Europe '72 ( just think of the Venues ! they played ??! ) - Veneta ( just go SEE that place for yourself !?! ) + a 4-Night Stand at the B.C.T. in Berkeley, a couple nights in L.A., and one as well in Colorado -- ALL under their collective belt. All this action just leading up to this Fall Tour '72 right in " Year 7 " for this band, which is difficult to deny as a most " Vital-Prime " for them. So here's the 9/27 Show for you to hear -- Rockin' Perfection ?? I think so. Hey, we're talkin' Dark Star > Cumberland Blues - Attics of My Life !!?!! Go ahead & be the judge for yourself. Immaculate Musicianship !!! indeed. Enjoy !!!!!
