Late 1979 ( Early-Brent Era !! ) Grateful Dead ! - at it's Red-Hot ! Burning Peak !! - right in the Bay Area ! ... on a New Year's Eve Show Run ! - at the Good Ol' Oakland Auditorium !!!!! A Show where ' Live ' G.D. Smoke ! - turns Quickly !! ... into Fire !!! 1979 Live-Dead !!! Dead Fans !! - and naturally ... All fellow Lovers ! of Brent-Era G.D. !!! This was the 1st ( & Only ! ) Road Trips Series ' Return ' back to " '79 Dead " since the Inaugural Road Trips release ( Vol. 1 / No. 1 ), and - it was done for very-very good reason. To my ear, this " Go To Heaven " Era was such an Incredibly ! special-period for the Band -- as it was truly the birthplace for what we all ( well, almost all of us ... ) love to excitedly refer to as our " 80's Dead ! ". I myself love the Brent Era. I know many Dead Fans do & many Dead Fans don't ( but probably not nearly as many ?! ), but I truly do love it ... as it is probably my favorite overall era of Grateful Dead ! However - I do admit I cheat a slight bit when making this claim, as I also include both 1979 & 1990 in my personal definition of " The 80's " - as do most ! Obviously, this is a really important thing when talking Grateful Dead. I obtained this 12/28 show on analog cassette well over 35 years ago, and it immediately became one of those tapes that I was worried I might wear out, and would have to replace ! It was one of those, you know : ( A + ( band performance ) / A + ( sbd quality tapes ) ) -- the kind that you would make sure to carry religiously in your Travel Tape Case, for the very long ( yet perfect ! ) double-digit hour drive to Oakland, California. Yeah, that's right the ROAD TRIP !!! I never saw the Dead at the old Oakland Auditorium, but I did see the Jerry Garcia Band play there ! So incredibly glad I did that, because it truly helps you see, hear & visualize the very acoustics of the Venue when listening to a high-energy Dead performance - just like this one. Plus, this just isn't any G.D. Venue that we're talking about here Fans ... as we're talking about the Kaiser !!! Sacred G.D. Grounds, for certain ... Many of you were fortunate enough to see the Dead play there, and some of you probably saw them there plenty of times ! But I'm sure we can definitely agree on this -- What an intimate indoor venue ?!! Just ideal, really. One listen to this kickin' Late-'79 Road Trips Set & you'll get to hear ( or will be conveniently-reminded ) just how much the Dead really liked to play there too !! ... Enjoy !!!!!
