' College Campus G.D. " Road Trip !!! " Two ( 2 ) Fantastic !! 1980 " Road Trip " Tour Stops ! on the College Campuses !! of both Penn State ( P.S.U. ) & Cornell University ( C.U. ) ... including the long-awaited '80 " Return ! " - to Barton Hall !!! ... Ithaca - New York !!!!! Alright !!!!! Now here we have a true " Road Trip " - " College-Style " touching down on the East Coast Colleges of both Penn State & Cornell !!! This release also marks only the 2nd-return to the fine year 1980 for the Grateful Dead in the pro-release format, dating back prior all the way to the " Reckoning ( For The Faithful ) " & " Dead Set " Live G.D. Albums released from the 1980 October Radio City Shows!?! The only other being the awesome " Go To Nassau " 2-CD Set released close to two decades ago. These are some fine choices from a superb May-80 Tour where the Band was mighty-hot through a pre-summer East Coast swing. First, this is the only release we have Ever-seen from the band playing at Penn State which probably came to the delight of many P.S.U. College Alumni - and this is one of ( if not 'the' ) largest schools on the entire East Coast! A pretty cool happening for all of those G.D. Fans out-there who are also among the Nittney-Lion faithful ! And secondly, the 5/7/80 Barton Hall ( Cornell U. ) show marked not only the band's 1st return to " Ithaca " since the 5/8/77 " Monster Show ! " which has long-lived as a legend in Grateful Dead World folklore ( all I can say is " Scarlet > Fire !!! " ) - but this event also included the celebration of Billy Kreutzmann's 34th Birthday! Heck, I guess it meant that Phil was officially closer ( or almost closer ) to 40 then 30! Well regardless, everyone sounds young here & they are truly getting after-it during both of these performances. These Two ( 2 ) Shows are ' Meshed ' in this release, and the way it was done is quite-nice, in my personal opinion. You get a segment ( near complete ! ) of the " Go To Heaven " sound, and get a great taste of what a lot of this super material sounded like coming right out of the gate ... Althea, Lost Sailor > Saint of Circumstance ( x 2 ), Feel Like A Stranger, Lazy Lightning > Supplication, etc.. And in addition, all of the 70's material is played with passion - both Early & Late material. The China > Rider, Other One, Good Lovin' & Shakedown Street are all hot, heavy & dead on the mark ! And last but not least... if you paid your dues catching the " Dead Head Hour " back in the Late-80's/Early-90's, you will be delighted to know that you now have a pro-released version ( to replace your weathered FM analog tape ) of the infamous " Playing In The ... Barn !!! ". Yep, you guessed it... this is the passionate version of " Playin' " where Ace voices his 'mild' dissatisfaction with the acoustic ambiance ( and probably facilities too ! ) of Cornell's " Barton Hall ". Classic. Well? All I can say is it housed the " G.D. Magic ! " pretty nicely in '77, and does once again here in '80 with style. They are definitely groovin' during this May-'80 run, and I think us lovers of the " Early-'80's Dead " sound should be Grateful ! to once again be the glad recipients of an excellent selection for release where the band members are really feeling-it & truly gelling -- on not just One, but Two ( 2 ) Hot Nights !!
