First off, if you are a serious fan of Pre-Hiatus ( Pre November 1974 ) Grateful Dead, then you absolutely need to hear this release, as it is indeed a complete no brainer - and if you collect " Only the Best " in G.D. releases -- then yes, this is one you most definitely need. A True " Time-Capsule " release from 2004 - still Brand New & Factory-Sealed !!! and the " Bonus Disc CD " ( from Academy of Music in March '72 ) is without question one of the very-toughest " Bonus Discs " to acquire - a 2004 release here, which is still Brand New !! And ' musically ' ... just think this in regard to the Bonus Disc >>> '72 Veneta, Oregon meets Europe '72 ! I think that is the very best quick & in-a-nutshell way that I can personally describe this one. Basically ( without ' totally ' spoiling the soup for you ), this March '72 Academy of Music Bonus Disc ( New York City ! ) release offers 6-Tracks ( Playing In The Band - Sugar Magnolia > Caution ( Do Not Stop On Tracks ) > Jam > Uncle John's Band & Dark Star ! ), and the Band comes straight out of the gate swinging & way-ready to Rock ! The Playing In The Band is the 1st selection, and it is pretty much the victim ( victim, in a good way ! ) of a no-holds-barred Jerry Garcia Electric-Guitar Assault ! with some of the Meanest ! Colorsound Wah action that you can imagine ! And yes, I know - you can imagine quite a bit ... But no-kidding, as it is right about here that Phil just starts to pound away at high-volume rhythm perfection, and the drum stick action begins - being just spot-on ! At this point you are like yep, they're in " The Zone ". Sugar Mag is rip-roaring and I won't say when - but later on this disc, Garcia toys-around with what I think we could ' almost ' consider a near Sugar Mag re-entry - as it gets called off in a subtle way by deeper & spacier jamming-away. Pigpen straight-out muscles away at this ' Caution ', and as we well-know - this was some of his last " Best " on U.S. soil, even though in Europe he did still managed to consistently bring the heat. The ' Jam ' on here is played with integrated passion & power, heads sweetly into Uncle Johns Band - then finishes up with a mesmerizing Dark Star !!! So, how can you really go wrong ?! One of the best ( top-shelf ! ) Bonus Disc CD's here, and considering that it takes place during the U.S. ( New York ! ) March 1972 " warm-up " for the Legendary Twenty-Two ( 22 ) Europe '72 stops following -- the Fan-demand for this one makes way more than good sense. " Europe '72 Tour " !!! And as you might well expect - considering the time & era of Grateful Dead Music we are talking about here ... the Band is Red-Hot right out of the gate for this Monumental ! Tour, and the Magic ! truly stays Alive ! through & through this Twenty-Two ( 22 ) stop Tour through Europe ! Seven ( 7 ) Shows were played at the ' Academy of Music ' in New York City in Late-March ( 3/21-28/72 ) -- ((( hence, the Very-Appropriate nature of the " Academy of Music " 1-CD Bonus Disc CD in this 4-CD ( total ) set !! ))) and if you have heard any Shows, pieces or parts of this magnificent-run ... then you already well know how " effective " this N.Y.C. run was as the ideal " Tour Warm-Up " for this Big-Time Europe '72 stretch that was just right around the corner. Europe '72 kicked off at the Wembley Empire Pool ( London ) on 4/7/1972, as part of a two-night stand. And from there it was 20 More Shows ( 22 in Total ! ) stretching from London, to Newcastle upon Tyne ( England ), to Copenhagen, to Aarhus ( Denmark ), back to Copenhagen, to Bremen ( Germany ), then right here ! ... to Dusseldorf, West Germany at the Rheinhalle 4/24/1972, hence " Rockin' The Rhein " !!!, and from here ... on to Frankfurt ( 100 Year Hall ! ), to Hamburg, to Paris, to the Bickershaw Festival ( Wigan, England ), to Amsterdam, to Rotterdam, to France, to Luxembourg, to Munich, and back to London for a final 4-night stand at the Lyceum ! Europe '72 !!! Yum ! Well, musically ? Let's just say that there is beyond good reason why this 4/24/1972 Show ! & Recording !! was 'selected' by the powers that be way back in 2004 - making it only the " 2nd " pro-release to be bestowed upon the loyal ( & very patient ) Dead Fans !
