" 3-CD recording is from the ' Rheinhalle ' in Dusseldorf, Germany on April 24th, 1972 ( 4/24/72 ) - and this is the Ninth ( 9th ) Show that took its time & place on the Monumental ! & Historic !! " Europe '72 Tour " !!! And as you might well expect - considering the Time & Era of Grateful Dead Music we are talking about here ... the Band is Red-Hot ! right out of the gate for this Monumental ! Dead Tour - and the Magic ! truly stays Alive !! through & through this Twenty-Two ( 22 ) stop Tour through Europe ! Seven ( 7 ) Shows were played at the Academy of Music in New York City in Late-March ( 3/21-28/72 ) - and if you have heard any Shows - pieces or parts of this Magnificent ! run - then you already well know how " effective " this N.Y.C. run was as the ideal " Tour Warm-Up " for this Big-Time Europe '72 stretch that was just right around the corner. Europe '72 kicked off at the Wembley Empire Pool ( London ) on 4/7/72 - as part of a two-night stand. And from there it was 20 More Shows ( 22 in Total ) stretching from London - to Newcastle upon Tyne ( England ) - to Copenhagen - to Aarhus ( Denmark ) - back to Copenhagen - to Bremen ( Germany ) - then right here ! ... to Dusseldorf, West Germany at the Rheinhalle 4/24/72 - hence ... " Rockin' The Rhein " !!! And, from here ... on to Frankfurt ( 100 Year Hall ! ) - to Hamburg - to Paris - to the Bickershaw Festival ( Wigan, England ) - to Amsterdam - to Rotterdam - to France - to Luxembourg - to Munich - and back to London for a final 4-night stand at the Lyceum ! Europe '72 !!! Yum !! Well, and Musically ? Let's just say that there is beyond good-reason why this 4/24/72 Show ( & Recording ! ) was ' selected ' by the powers that be way back in 2004 - making it only the " 2nd " pro-release from the " Europe '72 " Tour ! to be bestowed upon the loyal ( & very patient ) Dead Fans ! With of course " 100 Year Hall " ( Frankfurt, West Germany ) being the " 1st pro-release " from 1995 - other than the original " Europe '72 " release & the " Steppin' Out With The Grateful Dead " ( Europe '72 England compilation ( 2002 ) ). The Band ' begins ' " Rockin' the Rhein " with a Red-Hot ! Truckin' - and it's pretty much all up-hill from here - seriously. An amazing China > Rider probably is the " 1st Set " stealing candidate - but Big ! versions of Loser - Playin' In The Band - Good Lovin' & even Casey Jones are right on its heels !! Set II offers a beautiful He's Gone opener - followed by a bluesy Hurts Me Too - and a snappy El Paso ... then from here ? Sheer Grateful Dead " Magic !!! " - my fellow Dead Fans : Dark Star > Me & My Uncle > Wharf Rat > Sugar Magnolia > Not Fade Away > G.D.T.R.F.B. > Not Fade Away !!!!! With, naturally ... a One More Saturday Night Encore !
