Built mostly from local limestone and Connemara marble on the western bank of the River Corrib between 1958 and 1965, it was officially opened and consecrated on 15 August 1965. The final upper level eighteen stained-glass windows were installed in 1999. Overall width of transepts: 48 m. Overall length of transepts: 92 m. Height of dome inside: 38 m. Height of dome outside to top of Cross: 44 m. Organ built by Liverpool firm of Rushworth & Draper, contains some 2,000 pipes ranging in height from 0.15 to 6 m."
