Robert Blakey (1795–1878) rose from modest origins to become a prolific author and professor of logic and metaphysics at Queen’s College, Belfast. Though he wrote widely on philosophy and political literature, “it is, however, by his books on angling that he will be remembered with pleasure and gratitude by the largest circle of readers” (ODNB), reflecting his lifelong passion for the sport. His Hints on Angling (1846), published under the pseudonym Hackle Palmer, remains particularly valued by fishing enthusiasts.
