The sweltering heat arrives, and the sunbirds fly angrily. Fluids flow like metal and stone, and white sweat soaks clothes. A gentle breeze blows through the southern gate, bringing coolness. Jade pillows are useless, and peach-leaf flutes are of no use. Hesitant and uncertain, I know not what to do. Then I tear a piece of light silk, like snow, and make a round fan, like the moon. Its light shimmers in my sleeves, and coolness rises from my hair. My thoughts drift to the green duckweed, and I draw a gentle breeze from the sky. My clothes feel light and crisp, and my linen is damp with sweat. It awakens my bones and muscles, and I feel a sudden, intense heat. But if I leave it, my heart burns with heat. Perhaps the Creator, wishing to alleviate the people's anger, has used human effort to provide this relief. Otherwise, how could the seasons of Heaven be taken away? I then write down a poem of appreciation, which I find remarkable. I use light dust to express my sorrow, and spread the message of farewell. Some depict a woman riding a phoenix, while others mistakenly depict a fly. I feel ashamed of my white feathers and inferiority compared to a palm leaf. When the Shang Qi (a concept in Chinese astrology) arrives, the people are at peace; jade dew descends upon all plants, and golden winds bring forth cassia branches. Silk robes flutter again, and autumn orchids bloom once more. A lone firefly casts its cold light, and crickets chirp in the darkness. Chests are discarded, and nets are woven. Ban Jie's lamentation at the crossroads is like that of Ban Zhao, and Jiang Yan's poem of desolation is like that of Ban Zhao. Alas! Use and discard have their times, and going out and staying have their appropriate places. This applies to people as well; why doubt things? Those foxes and badger, trying to survive the winter, surely they too grieve in the heat of summer! If one's actions and whereabouts are determined by the Way, then one should wait for the opportune time to find peace. Alas, sages and worthies are nowhere to be seen, and what do these two men know? On October 23, year snake, in the city of Thousand Oaks, written by Anita Wang Written style: free style (行書) Materials: black ink on bamboo slip wax resist paper Size of rice paper: 13” x 44” Others: 1.
