Description
Framed Aviation Week & Space Technology presentation plaque featuring the iconic February 20, 1984 cover image depicting NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless II during his historic untethered extravehicular activity using the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) aboard Space Shuttle Challenger (STS-41B). This image is among the most recognizable photographs in the history of human spaceflight, documenting the first time a human flew freely in space without a tether. The reverse bears handwritten notations by McCandless reading “My wkshp / G H / 3-28,” indicating personal placement/storage. From the personal collection of Bruce McCandless II. CONDITION: Overall good condition with light wear consistent with age and display. Minor surface wear to the plaque and edges. Handwritten notation to verso is clearly legible. COLLECTOR’S NOTES: This is a highly desirable McCandless-associated display piece featuring one of the most iconic images of the Space Shuttle era. The handwritten verso notation adds a direct layer of astronaut provenance not present on standard examples of this plaque.
