Grateful Dead : 30 Trips Around The Sun : 1970 : Winterland - San Francisco, California ( CA ) - April 15, 1970 ( 4/15/70 : 4/15/1970 ) : 2 CD : Limited Edition of 6,500 ( All Un-Numbered CD Sets ) : GD 50 release : 2015 (1970/2015) Grateful Dead Productions, Inc. / Rhino ( GDP / Rhino ) : Brand New ! The Grateful Dead ' Live ' at the Winterland Arena ! - on the West-Coast " '70 Spring Tour !! ... China > Rider ! - Hard To Handle ! - Other One ! - Lovelight > NFA > Lovelight ! ... 1970 " Prime Era ! " Live-Dead !!!!! Grateful Dead Fans !!! Offered here is the " 1970 " CD Set ( Brand New ! ) from inside the Legendary ! Grateful Dead " 30 Trips Around The Sun " Box Set - released in 2015 in direct conjunction with the much anticipated " 50-Years ! Celebration of The Grateful Dead " ( 1965 - 2015 ) ... GD 50 !!! And, to honor this Landmark ! Rock & Roll Achievement - Grateful Dead Productions / Rhino released a Limited Edition Box Set ( of 6,500 units ) - to rightfully ' Commemorate ' " '65 "! And in unprecedented ( & So-Cool ! ) fashion ... this Monster Box Set included Thirty ( 30 ) Grateful Dead Shows on Thirty ( 30 ) CD Sets ( 80-CD's in total ) - and, each CD Set represents the sequential years of the Band's 30-Year development ... from 1966 to 1995 ! Obviously, this was a " Deadheads Dream " type Box Set - for the Beyond-Special occasion ... of 50-Years Upon Our Heads ! Fantastic, to say the least ... Wow !!! And, for the 30 Trips " 1970 " 2-CD Set selection offered here ... Whoa ?!!!! The for ' so-long ' ... " Mystery " Show ! at the Winterland Arena on 4/15/70 !! ... a one-night-only stand at the Winterland - following the Legendary Four ( 4 ) Show consecutive-night stand ( 4/9/70 through 4/12/70 ) at the Fillmore West !! And ... WOW !!! I mean what a Show ! to go with for that seriously-competitive " 1970 " slot for the " 30-Trips " release - Big-Time ! Because I have to say ... when even Dead Base XI was released way-back in 1999 ... This ! was all that was listed, for this Monster-'70 ! Dead Show >>> Cold Rain - China > Rider - Candyman - Hard To Handle - Cumberland - Cryptical > Drums > Other One > Cryptical > Dire Wolf - Dancin' - Lovelight > NFA > Lovelight !!! And ... going back to Dead Base IX --- it was only ' this ' >>> Cold Rain - China > Rider - Mama Tried - It's A Man's World - Candyman - Hard To Handle !! And, to make matters even more mysterious with this 4/15/70 Winterland Show ... The " Deadhead Taping Compendium - Volume 1 ( 1965 - 1974 ) " had absolutely " no-review " for this Show. And, last by most-definitely not least ... I have never even heard it - at all, any part, anywhere - until 30-Trips ! ... so Yes !!! What Complete-Bliss ! to be treated to 2-CD's !! of this Spring '70 Beauty! of a Dead Show !! ... at the Good Ol' Winterland !!! And so ... here ultimately was how the Band rolled those Magic-Dice ! on 4/15/70 >>> ( Disc 1 : ) Cold Rain - China > Rider - ' Technical Difficulties ' - Mama Tried - It's A Man's World - Candyman - Hard To Handle - Cumberland ... & ( Disc 2 : ) Cryptical > Drums > Jam > Other One > Cryptical > Dire Wolf - Dancin' - Lovelight > NFA > Lovelight !!!!! And yeah ... so-finally ... Here We Go !! And, musically & sonically - just as you might well-expect ... there is Killer ! Live-Energy here, pretty much Everywhere !! - with the Band in sync ( full-on ! ), and with that same sort of high-energy, well-played reckless, yet so-accurate vigorous Attack ! of Shows the likes of the Legendary-' Bookends ' of this " Prime " Dead period the likes of say ... 2/13/70 & 5/2/70. With, the only main difference really - being that almost always ' noticeable ' East-Coast-Show " power-edge ". As many of Garcia's Fiery Fret Board ' Ascensions ' are still there - they just don't tip the scale ( or the Mind ! ) just quite like the Monster !!! '70 Shows - like 2/13/70 & 5/2/70, in general. But, taking a really-close look at it ... you could almost in part say that this reason is due to the Set List itself, and the variety & order of songs called. And, for clear examples of this ( way-clear ) ... it's real easy to note the absence of St. Stephen - Cosmic Charlie - Casey Jones - Good Lovin' - Viola Lee Blues, and of course ... Morning Dew - Bid You Goodnight - and ... Dark Star. So, you know ... a Choice ! Dead Show here on 4/15/70 with super-juicy versions of China > Rider - Hard To Handle - Cumberland - Cryptical > Other One - Lovelight - & NFA !!! So, yes indeed ... breathtaking & huge - virtually all-throughout ... but, for lack of a better way to put it technically --- the Dead choose to leave a few of it's high-scoring ' Starters ' off of the Show Setlist on this night. Though, at the same time - it would still be real tough ( in any way ) to consider this Show a lower-energy, and mellower ' West Coast ' Show. As the simply fact is ... the gears get a churning - and they are " ON " !!! Right from the starting-gate too, really ... with this Amazing ! '70-esque China > Rider !!! And again, I was just so-pleased in general that this 4/15 was picked, much because of the mystery-alone that existed prior - and, especially during my own heavy Tape-Trading years in the Late '80's & '90's ... all the way through the arrival of DAT. Which, was indeed when Dead Base itself was finally able to make an ' update ' to this Show's Set List. And I mean really ... you could almost go as far as rating this Show a 9 of 10 - or, real-close ... even if you are a super-scrutinizing Dead Fan. Ha ! As the simple truth is ... the Touring-Year of '70 did indeed have some tried & true " 10's " - and, I think it's pretty obvious that we do well know what they are. But, hey ... you know - " Forever Hopeful " !!! I was just really impressed to see a " 1970 " release inside of the 30-Trips release - which included a Show which I had never-heard ! And, even better-yet - I was well-familar of it's existence, but wasn't quite sure that I would ever hear it. So, yeah ... Thanks !!! to the " 50th Anniversary " of the Good Ol' Grateful Dead -- now we All ! get to hear it, again, and again, and again ... and with Sound !! like-This !!! Enjoy !!!!!
