( GDP ) - GDCD 4043 : ' Original ! ' First ( 1st ! ) Printing : Out of Print ! & Very-Rare !!! The Grateful Dead flat-out Smokin' ! Maryland !! on '72 Fall Tour !!! ... with even a little 13-Point Bolt ! Maryland Crab Art !! & ' Steal Your Face ! ' Art too - on the Eastern Shore ! Beach Sand !!!!! -- Humongous !! Fall Tour '72 Live-Dead !!! ... in ' The MD ' !!!!! Nice. Very Nice !!! Wow, what is it about '72 Dead ?? Is it the current Band line-up ? Is it the fact that Jerry Garcia gun slings many-a Fender Strats during this period ( Alligator - Sunburst & the White / Alembic ) - and has complete command of their particularly wide laid fret boards & twangy-tones ? Huh . Is is the fact that everybody in the Band has sweet & basically pristine vocal contributions ? Maybe it's when Keith's piano / keys playing best melds & weaves with the string instruments ? Is it because Bobby delivers like a Psychedelic-Cowboy ! in complete & utter command, or - because Phil just makes the executive decision that this ' Democratic-Band ' also needs another 4-String ( & Heavier ! ) Bass Lead Guitar ? I don't know, I really don't. But, if you're like me -- you have somewhat recently listened to seventy-three ( 73 ) Europe '72 CD's ( The Whole Dang Tour ! ), in rightful & complete order ... this indeed is a downright Magical ! period & Era for the Band, and I must openly admit that I do not listen to it enough. It sounds at times like a perfect & finely-tuned Musical-Machine !, and someone that is not even on stage is pulling the strings ?? You know what, on this 1972 Fall Tour ( unlike in Europe ) maybe some of it was -- the " missed-spirit of Pigpen ", perhaps ? This Fall Tour was the 1st big run the Band had to do without his presence & security. And though his sad passing didn't occur until March of '73, I think there is some serious emotion conveyed through the music in this fragile, yet still strong & mighty period for the Dead. You can consistently hear the emotion & the determined drive to play well, not only for the fans in the venues with this ( once-again ) altered line-up, but also for the memory honor & respect of Ron McKernan. You can hear it loud & clear in this Baltimore Dick's Pick's, you can hear it in Jersey City & you can hear it at the Spectrum. I mean here is a Tour where Dick Latvala felt it was so worthy, that there were three ( 3 ) separate Dick's Picks releases ( # 12, # 23 & # 36 ) from it's yield ( including " The Last " D.P. # 36 ). The Bird Song is delightful, the China > Rider has every ounce of the '72 punch ! The Playin' is heading towards the '73 space-ages, in timely fashion - Truckin' smokes -- Loser & Jack Straw are bold & brisk. And, there is a stop-on-a-dime moment during the middle of 1/2 Step Mississippi which makes me smile ! And as far as the Other One ?? Dang ... Wow ! This one is very-different, for sure - in sound, tone ... in the set list, and in the G.D. live game plan of delivery ! It rides a fine line between power / grace & subtlety - just hear it yourself to see, as words just really come up short in trying to describe this one Oh, and of course too ... this is the Show where you are afforded the pleasure of a nothing short of Legendary Sing Me Back Home > Sugar Magnolia > Uncle John's Band ... pretty-amazing. All of this in the " just a hair " uptempo ( versus ' a hair slower ' tempo through most of '73 ) almost a rockabilly 1972 Grateful Dead style that goes way deep into the musical depths & the unknown at will. Immaculate ... and - this one even happened in the MD ! One of the Finest ! Deadhead regions in all of the land. Just ask the G.D. 13-Point Lightning-Bolt Maryland Crab ! on the Liner Notes - as he crawls sideways ... across the " Steal Your Face ! " Eastern Shore Beach Sands !! ... some seriously-Grate ! Liner Notes Artwork for this DP # 23 Set. Enjoy !!!!! This live set is pure fire! The Dead are at their peak here—energetic jams, crisp sound, and that legendary '72 magic. The Baltimore show delivers killer versions of "Dark Star" and "Bird Song," plus the artwork adds a cool local touch. A must-have for Deadheads, especially since it's rare and OOP. Sounds incredible, feels like you’re right there in the crowd!
