Description

This 1985 French import double LP box set from Erato Records (NUM 751272) features a 1983 performance of King Arthur by Henry Purcell, with libretto by John Dryden. Featured performers include Jennifer Smith (soprano), Gillian Fisher (soprano), Elisabeth Priday (soprano), Gill Ross (soprano), Ashley Stafford (alto), Paul Elliott (tenor) and Stephen Varcoe (baritone), backed by the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists, directed by John Eliot Gardiner. A large (album-sized) 22-page booklet is included containing album notes, photos, illustrations and other discussion by various contributors, plus full lyrics, all in English, French and German. Also included are photocopies of three different reviews of the album from The Gramophone of October, 1984; Stereo Review of April, 1985; and Opus from December, 1985. The outer box is in excellent condition, and both front and back covers have no corner splits or other damage. It shows a small collection index sticker in the upper right corner of the back (Photo 2) . This is one of many titles from an extensive collection of classical LPs and CDs that we will be listing here. All have been carefully stored for many years, played only on premium equipment, and show little to no wear. NOTES: Album sleeves may have a small index sticker, usually in the upper right corner of the back, which was applied when the album was first purchased for this private collection.
