Important astronaut-owned presentation lot honoring NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless II for his role in one of the most significant missions of the Space Shuttle era: the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope. The lot includes an original American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Haley Space Flight Award, presented to Bruce McCandless II along with fellow astronauts Charles F. Bolden Jr., Steven A. Hawley, Loren J. Shriver, and Kathryn D. Sullivan, for distinguished performance in the deployment of Hubble during Space Shuttle mission STS-31 (April 1990). The award is dated January 8, 1991 and is signed in print by AIAA leadership. Accompanying the award is a framed Aviation Week & Space Technology cover display featuring the Hubble Space Telescope in orbit, headlined “Historic Images of Hubble’s Deployment” (May 14, 1990), directly relating to the mission recognized by the award. Both pieces originate from the personal collection of Bruce McCandless II, and the verso includes an original label identifying the items as his personal property. CONDITION: Overall good condition with light wear consistent with age and display. Frames show minor scuffing and edge wear. Glazing presents well with typical minor surface marks visible under strong light. Award certificate remains clean and highly legible. COLLECTOR’S NOTES: This is an exceptional “mission-provenance” display lot connecting McCandless directly to the Hubble Space Telescope deployment, one of NASA’s most historically important Shuttle missions. The AIAA award is a true career-recognition artifact (not a souvenir), and the accompanying Aviation Week cover display provides an outstanding visual companion piece for collectors.
