Cast-metal Air Force Association presentation plaque awarding The David C. Schilling Award to Captain Bruce McCandless II, USN, dated 1985. The David C. Schilling Award is described by the Air Force Association as its highest honor in the field of flight. This example was presented in direct recognition of McCandless’s historic achievement aboard Space Shuttle Challenger (STS-41B), when he became the first human to conduct an untethered extravehicular spaceflight using the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU). The plaque features deeply raised lettering and the Air Force Association emblem, and includes award text praising McCandless’s “personal courage and pioneering spirit,” describing his achievement as becoming history’s first “human satellite.” Housed in its original framed presentation format.
